THE
BAND
We have a special event planned for the music at the Friday and
Saturday Night Dances at this year's Riot. It was an idea that I
have been kicking around for months with Marc Devine, of Austin's
Denia and the Devine Company. We wanted to give the guests at the
Riot 2001 the best of modern swing music. We decided to put together
a core band of experienced swing musicians who like to play for
the dancers. Then, we would bring in a different guest or two each
night, and build the sound, song selection and arrangements for
that night around the guest star. Marc assembled the core band from
the musicians he met during his years in the Clark Terry Great Plains
Jazz School.
Clark
Terry is one of contemporary music's great innovators. A trumpeter
who is greatly celebrated for his great technical virtuosity and
swinging lyricism. He joined Count BAsie in 1948, and moved to Duke
Ellington's band in 1951 where he was a featured soloist for 8 years.
In recent years, Clark Terry has become recognized as one of jazz's
great educators. To further that pursuit he founded his school.
Marc Devine studied there for 3 years. The band for the Riot is
made up mostly of musicians from that school.
The
Core Band
Marc Devine and Denia Ridley - Marc plays keyboards and arranges
music, and Denia sings, in Denia and The Devine Company. This Austin
Band has been a local favorite on the Austin jazz scene for the
last few years. Adam Schroeder on Baritone Sax - Adam joined Denia
and the Devine Company when it was formed. He returned to Austin
with Marc after they left the Clark Terry School. Adam was awarded
DownBeat Magazine's 2000 Collegiate Jazz Soloist of the Year. Steven
Fulton on Trumpet - Steven was picked by Clark Terry to be program
director of the Terry school. He played with Woody Herman's Band
for years. When the Terry School closed, he moved to New York to
work with Clark Terry, Al Grey, and Sonny Stitt. Aleksander "Sascha"
Lukashin on Drums - Eddie Achmetchine on Tenor and Alto Sax - Sascha
and Eddie emigrated from Russia to the United States in the early
nineties to study jazz and play. They met Marc, Adam and Steven
at the Terry School. They currently live and play in Houston, Texas.
Friday
Night's Guest - Martin Banks on Trumpet
Martin
Banks is originally from Austin. He moved to Los Angeles in the
late'50s where he played with Dinah Washington and Dexter Gordon.
He moved from there to New York City where he played for a time
with Duke Ellington's Band, the Sun Ra Band, and the Count Basie
Band. He moved back to Austin in the early '90s. The Friday night
song selection and arrangements will swing with a lot of punch,
featuring a few trumpet battles between Martin and Steven.
Saturday
Night's Guest - Mike Wheeler on Guitar
Mike has done extensive session work with Joe Williams, Clark Terry
and Willie Nelson. He is currently an instructor in Jazz Guitar
at the University of Saint Thomas in Houston. The Saturday night
song selection and arrangements will have a smoother and bluesier
swing in the vein of the Count Basie Band.
We hope
you enjoy the live music at Swing Riot 2001.
