Please list your experience level as a Lindy Hopper on the ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM

Use the following guidelines to define your experience level. We will use this information to help set a schedule of classes best suited to the needs of ALL of the dancers at the Riot. Classes, and all of the instructors, will be divided between these experience levels. Please select your level conservatively - remember that a challenge does not mean a struggle to keep up. Please do not rely on your level of placement at other workshops/camps - use the following guidelines.

Beginner/Intermediate
You have taken several months of lessons and may have had the influence of prior workshops. You are familiar and comfortable with these basics: the Swing-out, the Circle to closed, the Tuck-turn, 6 count Lindy and the Charleston. You lindy hop comfortably at slow and moderate tempos. You want to learn new, usable moves, and to take your basic form to the next level of style and grace.

Intermediate
You have been lindy-hopping and taking classes for at least 4 months and have been to previous workshops. You can confidently move through a variety of moves, turns and variations beyond the basics of 8 and 6 count Lindy and Charleston on the social dance floor, and you feel that your lead-follow skills are improving. You are comfortable with moderate tempo Lindy (140 - 160 bpm) and can adjust your dancing between tempos without tiring or losing balance. You are ready to expand your dance vocabulary and also to take your Lindy to the next level, so that you can dance with grace and ease to up-tempo Lindy (180 bpm).

Intermediate/Advanced
Now, you are ready for new challenging moves, steps, and ideas of style to make your dancing more exciting and advance your skills. You feel confident dancing with up-tempo music (180 bpm). You have given your dancing time and opportunity to grow up strong and healthy. Your step is softer and balanced now. At this level, the dance floor starts to become your genuine and reliable friend. You can combine turns, moves, 6/8 count patterns, jazz steps and syncopations and have discovered a more refined sense of lead or follow.

Advanced
"Advanced" means exactly what the word itself means and should be reflected upon with respect. You can hear and use the phrases, breaks, and feels of the music in a variety of tempos, including the faster ones which used to intimidate you. You now have an eye for better dancing, not new moves. Your are ready to focus on advanced connection and musicality as well as learn more intricate ways to move, lead/follow, and style out.

When registering for the Riot, please note whether you will be concentrating in the workshops as a lead or as a follow. And please use the above level descriptions to place yourself in the right class level. Women can register as leads and men can register as follows.

Footware for the Swing Riot
We strongly urge all registrants to bring soft-soled shoes (athletic shoes, jazz shoes, sneakers, Bleyers, Blochs, Capezios) to wear during all of the Riot. All of our dance floors to be used for the Riot are slick. Moreover, LEATHER-SOLED SHOES ARE FORBIDDEN on the floors to be used for the Sunday workshops.
